The USB spec contains the rules for lithium-ion battery charging. These are 5 volts at 1 amp for 6 hours, 6.5 volts at 2 amps for 3 hours, or 6.5 volts at 3 amps for 5 hours. The charger must also be labelled with the voltage and power output (in watts); and they must be CE, UL, or TÜV certified.

It is easy to determine the amount of current that is being provided by the USB port when it is connected to an electrical socket. The voltage is usually 120 volts in the United States.
